Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has expressed strong support for developing young sports talent from the grassroots level in the Philippines. He praised the recent Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Sports Summit held in Negros Island from April 25-30. In a video message, Go commended the 400 participating schools for their commitment to using sports for nation-building. The summit featured competitions across various sports like basketball, badminton, volleyball, football, martial arts, swimming, and others.
As head of the Senate Sports Committee, Senator Go has spearheaded laws to boost the country’s sports sector. He authored the law establishing the National Academy of Sports, a government training center for student-athletes in New Clark City integrating sports and academics. Go is also pushing for a National Games Act to create a comprehensive grassroots sports program nationwide. This ties into his advocacy of promoting physical activities to prevent youth drug use while enhancing physical and mental wellness.
“Your grassroots sports initiative shows patriotism and a shared vision of using sports for nation-building,” said Senator Go.
The senator has consistently advocated increasing funding for the Philippine Sports Commission to improve athlete training and discover new talents across the provinces. He noted over 80% of national athletes come from humble provincial backgrounds like Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz. Senator Go praised the coaches and parents for their crucial support role in athlete development. He encouraged the student-athletes to train hard, never quit, and aspire to become future Olympians.
“Thank you for giving underprivileged athletes this life-changing opportunity,” said Go, highlighting his advocacy of compassionate “Tapang at Malasakit” public service.
